Montana Furbearer

Furbearing animals are legally defined as beaver, otter, muskrat, mink, marten, fisher, wolverine, bobcat, swift fox and lynx. There is no season for lynx. Only Montana Residents may hunt or trap furbearers, and a license is required.

Predatory animals are legally defined as coyote, weasel, skunk and civet cat (spotted skunk). Licenses are required for nonresident trappers only to trap these species. Any wild animal not otherwise legally classifed by statue or regulation in Montana is considered "Nongame Wildlife". Examples of nongame wildlife are badger, raccoon and red fox. Licenses are required for nonresident trappers only of nongame wildlife.

You must check the fwp furbearer regulations before planning to trap or hunt any furbearer, predatory, or nongame animal in Montana to ensure compliance to all regulations. Furbearer Regulations are updated by FWP in mid-August each year.
