Otter are considered a "furbearing animal" in Montana. Only Montana residents may hunt or trap furbearers, and a license is required.

Listed below are 2012 dates. 2013 dates should be close to the same. This site will be updated with 2013 dates once they are released, which will be during the first few months of 2013. The statewide season dates for Otter are November 1st through April 15th, except state Wildlife Management Areas and specific closures. A person may take and posses two otter per season. The season closes in 48 hours from when a district species quotas is reached. Current harvest status information may be obtained by calling 1-800-711-8727.

Any Districts closed to beaver trapping are also closed for Otter.
