Montana Swift Fox

Swift Fox are considered a "furbearing animal" in Montana. Only Montana residents may hunt or trap furbearers, and a license is required.

A person may take and possess three (3) swift fox per season, but must report harvest of their animals within 24 hours by calling the statewide Fish, Wildlife & Parks reporting line at 1-877-397-9453. Trappers are also required to personally present the pelts of swift fox for tagging and skulls to a designated Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) employee within ten (10) days after harvest.

Please check the fwp furbearer regulations before planning to trap or hunt any furbearer, predatory, or nongame animal in Montana to ensure compliance to all regulations. Furbearer Regulations are updated by FWP in mid-August each year.
