Montana Turkey

Montana is home to the Merriam's sub-species of turkey. The tail and lower back feathers of the Merriam's turkey have white tips and the bird's overall color has purple and bronze reflections.

Merriam's turkey prefer open ponderosa pine forest in rugged terrain, interspersed with grassland and brushy draws, and feed on insects, bearberry, snowberry and skunkbrush sumac fruits, and grass leaves and stems. Turkeys regularly roost in trees, and fly better than most people are aware.

Turkey are considered an Upland Bird species in Montana. You must possess an Upland Bird hunting license in order to purchase a turkey license. There are two turkey seasons in Montana. The General Fall Season runs Sept 01 - Jan 01, during which time you may harvest 2 wild turkeys, either-sex, however the limit of the spring and fall season cannot exceed two turkeys per hunter.
